Volunteer for deployment for Army National Guard?

I'm an E3 in the Oklahoma Army National Guard and one of my battle buddies is in a different unit than I am. She just found out about 2 months ago that her unit is getting deployed to Kuwait in January next year while my unit is supposed to get deployed in 2012. I want to volunteer to go with my friend's unit because I would rather go sooner than later instead of just waiting around for my unit to find out when and where they are going. I've heard that I can either go through my unit's chain of command or I can just go to her unit and talk to AGR personnel there. What should I do?
