My boyfriend recently got fired, and they did a "set up" which?

involved the receptionist. The receptionist was our friend, isn't that betrayal? Anyway i came to work today, and they set up a huge meeting for every single employee and the boss told everyone the reason my bf got fired, details of the set up, even criticizing my bf, then handed out the official paper for terminiation my bf recieved available to anyone who wants to read it. Isn't this illegal? and defamation of character? should i confront my boss?
